Amgen Scholars Program at NIH

Amgen Scholars Program at NIH”

In 2015, the NIH became one of 24 leading institutions taking part in the Amgen Scholars Program, a training program that enables undergraduates to participate in cutting-edge Research opportunities at world-class institutions. The Amgen Scholars Program at NIH is designed for undergraduate students interested in Ph.D. and combined degree programs in the sciences. Scholars are matched with Research mentors in the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) and spend the summer working side-by-side with some of the world’s leading scientists at the NIH’s main campus in Bethesda, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical Research. The Amgen Scholars Program at NIH immerses Scholars in a culture of translational science and enables them to explore important elements of the basic, translational and clinical Research enterprise. The Amgen Scholars Program is made possible by a 12-year, $50 million commitment from the Amgen Foundation.

Goals

  • Immerse Scholars in a culture of translational science and enable them to explore important elements of basic, translational and clinical Research.
  • Provide Scholars with a customized curriculum using journal clubs, case studies, writing projects and group activities to develop communication, career readiness and critical thinking skills.
  • Explore the relationship between science and society in evening round tables that examine the role of science, policy, and community engagement in the elimination of health disparities.
  • Provide opportunities for leadership development, networking at the Amgen Scholars U.S. Symposium and presenting Research at the NIH Summer Poster Day.
