Nina K. Solarz Elected to the FNIH Board of Directors

Nina K. Solarz, Former Executive Director of Fund For Peace, Elected to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health’s Board of Directors

 

BETHESDA, MD, July 9, 2012 — Nina K. Solarz was unanimously elected to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Board of Directors. She began her term May 16, 2012.

Mrs. Solarz has also taught political science at Brooklyn College; served as Mayor Ed Koch’s representative in Washington, DC; and was the director of public affairs for the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy during the Reagan administration.

“I have spent my entire career working for not-for-profit organizations. I think I can use my experience to support and enhance the important work of the FNIH,” says Mrs. Solarz. “I am also intent upon thanking the NIH physicians, researchers, nurses, and providers for the incredible care they gave my husband [former Congressman Stephen Solarz], and so many other patients in every way I can.”

“After spending her career in political science and government, Nina is well suited to serve on the FNIH board,” according to Charles A. Sanders, MD, FNIH chairman. “She has served as executive director for Peace Links and Fund for Peace and has been a devoted volunteer of the FNIH.”

“Nina has been a good friend and supporter of the FNIH for many years,” according to FNIH’s Board Vice Chairman, The Honorable John Edward Porter. “Her willingness to serve is a testament to her devotion to advancing human health.”

Mrs. Solarz volunteers her time to additional not-for-profit and charitable organizations, including the International Crisis Group and the American Friends of Turkey.

Among the board members’ responsibilities are helping guide the FNIH’s mission and purpose; ensuring effective organizational planning; ensuring adequate resources and managing them effectively; reviewing, monitoring, and strengthening FNIH’s programs and services; and enhancing FNIH’s public standing.

In total, eight people were elected to the FNIH Board of Directors this spring. They are: Mr. Jim Donovan; Paul Herrling, PhD; Ronald L. Krall, MD; Edison Liu, MD; Mr. Joel S. Marcus; Mr. Steven C. Mayer; and Garry A. Neil, MD.
