Dr. Francis Collins Will Continue Serving as NIH Director and FNIH Ex-Officio Board Member

North Bethesda, MD, January 15, 2021 — President-elect Joe Biden has asked Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., ex-officio member of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Board of Directors, to remain as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to his transition team. The FNIH is delighted that Dr. Collins will continue to serve in this role, which he has held since 2009 when he was appointed by former President Barack Obama.

“This is welcomed news for the entire biomedical research enterprise,” said Maria C. Freire, Ph.D., President and Executive Director of the FNIH. “We look forward to continued progress on important research initiatives with our partner, the NIH, including our work through the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines program (ACTIV).”

Dr. Collins’ leadership has extended across many groundbreaking FNIH programs, including the Accelerating Medicines Partnership as well as the Partnership for Accelerating Cancer Therapies.
