The Stephen E. Straus, M.D. Portrait

In 2009, the many friends and family members of Dr. Stephen E. Straus contributed over $15,000 to the Foundation for NIH to commission a portrait of Dr. Straus, the founding director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).   Dr. Straus, who died of brain cancer in 2007, built a comprehensive research enterprise, championing the efforts to establish the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices while upholding the rigorous standards of science for which NIH is known. Under his leadership, CAM research at NIH grew threefold, facilitating his vision of an evidence-based integrative approach to health care for the benefit of the public.  The portrait, now hangs in the lobby of NCCAM.
