The incidence and impact of many health challenges vary with the age of the person, and so do effective intervention strategies. Successful programs must take into account the physical, psychological and social aspects of their targeted population.

Sarcopenia is common among older adults, resulting in serious consequences such as disability, increased mortality, and negative effects on co-morbid conditions. It is currently unrecognized as a disease state within the healthcare industry because there is a lack of uniform criteria for its diagnosis and severity.

Improving the health and well being of HIV-positive and at-risk youth is the goal of the Physical/Psychosocial Advocacy & Treatment For HIV Youth Program (PATH). This multi-disciplinary collaboration of experienced HIV researchers and care providers was established by Children’s Memorial Hospital and Howard Brown Community Health Center to conduct research on the north side of Chicago.

The Research Partnership in Cognitive Aging is a public-private effort between the National Institute on Aging, the McKnight Brain Research Foundation, and the Foundation for NIH to support current and emerging research on age-related changes in the brain influencing cognition and memory loss associated with normal aging.

The Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act of 2002 provided for the testing of drugs that had been approved for adult use and that are used to treat children, but had not been tested for children.

This program provides a model for teaching increased physical activity and good nutritional practices to children with disabilities. Children participating in the eight-week program are provided with a mentor who trains them and provides guidance on healthy living and behaviors. Students who have completed the program are awarded The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award certificate.
