Remembering FNIH in Your Will or Living Trust

“As a former nurse, I deeply respect the work of the doctors and staff of the NIH.  I have benefited both personally and professionally from the great work of the FNIH and NIH, particularly in their fight to defeat autoimmune diseases.  I am proud that by remembering the FNIH in my will, I am leaving a legacy in support of that work.”

—Patricia Nowosacki

In planning your estate through your will or living trust, you are thinking about what you want to leave behind.  Remembering FNIH in your planning means that you want to have a profound and lasting effect on scientific advances for safe and effective medical treatment. Your gift will save lives.

It’s a gift that costs you nothing now, is flexible and can often be established easily either through a new will or trust or a codicil/amendment thereto.

Following is information for options on language that you can give to your attorney/adviser to include in the appropriate document:

Residual Bequest/Gift - Allows you to give what remains of your estate/trust after specific bequests/gifts are fulfilled.  Consider the following language:  “I give the rest and residue of my estate to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, Inc, of Bethesda, Maryland, to be used for its general purposes.”

Percentage Bequest/Gift - Allows you to designate a percentage of your estate/trust.  Consider the following language: “I give to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, Inc, of Bethesda, Maryland, an amount equal to ___ per cent of the net value of my estate to be used for its general purposes.”

Specific Bequest/Gift - Allows you to give a specific dollar amount.  Consider the following language: “I give to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, Inc., of Bethesda, Maryland, the sum of _____________ to be used for its general purposes.”

You can choose to make a gift for a specific purpose or area of research or to give an unrestricted gift to FNIH so that we may allocate it where it is most needed at NIH.  We promise that we will steward the funds you have given in accordance with your wishes and in the most responsible way possible.  If you so choose, we will also honor you as a member of the FNIH Legacy Society.

Your attorney/adviser will also want to keep our address and tax id # on file.
