Giving to FNIH Through Your Retirement Plan

Since you first started working, you have been regularly reminded of the importance of saving for retirement. Now you may find that your retirement savings in your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other retirement plan are more than adequate.

Giving to FNIH through your retirement plan can be both rewarding and good tax planning. It also can be an easy gift to make. Please see just some of your retirement giving options to FNIH below:

Retirement Gifts as a Part of Future Planning - Tax-deferred retirement plans can create a heavy tax burden for your estate and lessen the amount your heirs will receive. They are subject to income tax at death. They may also be subject to estate or inheritance taxes depending on the level of your estate and state of residence.

If you choose to name FNIH as a beneficiary of your retirement account at your death, the funds will not be subject to tax. You may then choose to leave your heirs a greater share of the remainder of your estate, which can result in them receiving a greater amount.

Retirement plan gifts are easy to accomplish since they are best done outside of your estate. You can designate all or part of your retirement plan assets to FNIH. imply contact your retirement plan administrator to obtain the form to list FNIH as beneficiary. Or call Rob Drucker at (301) 594-7121 or rdrucker [at] fnih [dot] org for help with the process.

Retirement Plan Gifts During Lifetime - Retirement plan giving during lifetime is not always appropriate since there can be tax consequences to you.  But there are times when a gift during lifetime can be beneficial. If you are over age 70 ½, for instance, you might choose to give the mandatory distribution each year from your retirement plan. This can be a great way to donate and minimize any tax consequence from a retirement plan withdrawal. Please consult with your accountant/tax advisor to determine any tax ramifications.

We promise that we will steward the funds you have given in accordance with your wishes and in the most responsible way possible. If you so choose, for your kind gift, we will also show our appreciation by honoring you as a member of the FNIH Legacy Society.
