A gift to FNIH of your bank account, CD or savings bond you no longer need can go a long way to further the vital life-saving medical research and scientific advances at the NIH. Here’s how you can help:
Bank Accounts and CDs - You can choose to make a gift of a bank account or certificate of deposit (CD) to support the work of FNIH. If you have a bank account you can add a payable on death (POD) beneficiary. If you have a CD, you can name a POD beneficiary when you open the account or, in some circumstances, add a POD beneficiary in the middle of the CD. If you cannot name a POD beneficiary until the CD matures, be sure to schedule an appointment for that time to add a POD beneficiary.
You can choose to make a percentage or all of the account payable to FNIH upon your death. It will mean a great deal to us and we promise to steward your donation in the best way possible. Contact the bank or other financial institution holding your account or CD for instructions on naming FNIH as a beneficiary.
U.S. Savings Bonds (especially Series HH) - Although it is not possible to make a lifetime charitable gift of a savings bond without first paying the tax on the interest earned, it does make an excellent asset to bequeath to the FNIH. Why? Because savings bonds generate “income in respect of a decedent.” That means, if you die owning them the accumulated interest is taxed before your heirs inherit them. However, if the bonds are left to an organization like the FNIH, that tax is not due.
As an example, if you leaves $10,000 of U.S. savings bonds to a family member or individual and you are in the 35 percent income tax bracket, you will only receive $6,500 ($10,000 minus $3,500) after paying the income tax on the bonds. If you were to leave the bonds to the FNIH, we would receive the entire $10,000 because we are a tax-exempt organization. Check with your advisors about the best way to bequeath your savings bonds to the FNIH.
We promise that we will steward the funds you have given in accordance with your wishes and in the most responsible way possible. If you so choose, for your kind gift, we will also show our appreciation by honoring you as a member of the FNIH Legacy Society.
