FOUNDATION FOR NIH RECEIVES $250,000
CVS CAREMARK CHARITABLE TRUST GRANT
FOR I CAN DO IT PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN
AND YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES

________

Donation is part of the $5.5 million in grants the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust awarded through its annual grants program
__________

BETHESDA, Md., April 25—The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health today announced that it has received a $250,000 grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, the private foundation created by CVS Caremark Corporation. The three-year grant launches a Foundation for NIH effort to combat childhood obesity and improve physical fitness in children and youth with disabilities and funds implementation of the I Can Do It program at three participating sites—the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami, Fla.; Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, Pa.; and the Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Center, Patterson, N.Y.

The I Can Do It program provides a model for teaching increased physical activity and good nutritional practices to children with disabilities who are linked with a mentor in an eight-week program in which good practices are applied at least one hour per day, five days a week. I Can Do It is open to all children with disabilities, regardless of the type and severity. The special mentoring program has been tested in two studies and found to be very effective in effecting change in the physical activity of the child.

“Given the right resources and support, every child, regardless of ability, can achieve his or her full potential," said Eileen Howard Dunn, Vice President, CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. "That's why the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust is committed to supporting nonprofit organizations that provide innovative programs and services focused on helping children with disabilities and their families. We are proud to support the I Can Do It program under the auspices of the Foundation for NIH.”

Under the terms of the grant, each participating organization will reach at least 120 children per year for three years. This application of the I Can Do It model is expected to reach more than 1,000 as a result of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust grant.

The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust’s grant to the Foundation for NIH is part of its approximately $5.5 million in grants given to 39 nonprofit organizations across 14 states and Washington, D.C. Organizations that were selected to receive a grant were chosen through the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust’s 2007 grant application process. These donations align with CVS Caremark All Kids Can and this signature program’s goal of making life easier for children with disabilities and their families, and promoting awareness and inclusion of children with disabilities. Launched in 2006, CVS Caremark All Kids Can committed $25 million, as well as countless employee volunteer hours, over five years to support these important causes.

The Foundation for NIH submitted its proposal to the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust in partnership with the Office on Disability at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the Division of Nutrition Research Coordination at the National Institutes of Health.
