MARK EIN AND ELLEN SIGAL JOIN
BOARD OF
FOUNDATION FOR THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH
BETHESDA,
MD, Sep. 4-Mark D. Ein and Ellen V. Sigal have joined the
board of directors of the Foundation for the National Institutes
of Health, it was announced today. The Foundation for NIH
was established by the United States Congress to maximize
the resources available to the National Institutes of Health
and to provide the flexibility needed to address promising
new areas for biomedical research as they emerge.
Mark D. Ein is the founder and chief executive officer of
Venturehouse Group, LLC, a holding company that creates,
invests in and builds technology and telecommunications
companies. Prior to forming Venturehouse Group, Mr. Ein
was a principal with The Carlyle Group, a large private
equity firm with offices around the world. He serves on
the Trustee’s Council of the National Gallery of Art,
is a Washington trustee and on the executive committee of
the Federal City Council and was co-chairman of the 2000
Corporate Campaign for The Phillips Collection. He is on
the boards of directors of the Wolf Trap Foundation, the
SEED School and Foundation and The Washington Tennis &
Education Foundation. He also serves on the Advisory Board
of the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, was a charter member
of the Washington Redskins Leadership Council and is a member
of the Leadership Committee of Fight for Children and School
Night.
Ellen V. Sigal, PhD, is the founder and chairperson of Friends
of Cancer Research, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit
organization dedicated to accelerating the nation's progress
toward prevention and treatment of cancer. Dr. Sigal also
holds leadership positions with a broad range of cancer
advocacy and public policy organizations, including: Duke
University's Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Johns Hopkins
Cancer Center Advisory Council, the Foundation for the National
Institutes of Health, the American Association for Cancer
Research (AACR) and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Sigal
serves on the Board of Scientific Advisors for the National
Cancer Institute, and, most recently, Dr. Sigal was named
to the National Institute of Health Director's Council of
Public Representatives. For her efforts on behalf of cancer
research advocacy, Dr. Sigal received the 1998 American
Association for Cancer Research National Leadership Award,
the 1999 Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center National Leadership
Award, and the 2002 American Society of Clinical Oncology
Special Recognition Award.
Prior to her work in cancer research advocacy, Dr. Sigal
enjoyed a highly successful and influential business career
in commercial real estate.
The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health was
established by the United States Congress to support the
mission of the National Institutes of Health - improving
health through scientific discovery. The Foundation identifies
and develops opportunities for innovative public-private
partnerships involving industry, academia, and the philanthropic
community. A non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, the Foundation
raises private-sector funds for a broad portfolio of unique
