Fogarty at 40: The 40th Anniversary of the John E. Fogarty International Center

As the John E. Fogarty International Center celebrated 40 years of accomplishments in global health research and training, it convened several events focused on the next frontiers of global health research and diplomacy.  Events included the 40th Anniversary Awards Gala, the Global Health Diplomacy Conference with Georgetown University and the Fogarty Scholars in Residence: Exploring New Frontiers in Science program.

Congressman Donald M. Payne (l) and Dr. Charles SandersThe Fogarty International Center's 40th anniversary gala brought together leaders from Congress, federal agencies, science, advocacy groups, the diplomatic corps and businesses with interest in global health issues.

The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health hosted the Oct. 15 dinner at the Italian embassy in Washington, DC and honored Sen. Richard G. Lugar, R-Ind., and Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., for their global health leadership in Congress.Senator Richard Lugar receives an award from Dr. Charles Sanders for his achievements in global health.

Lugar, ranking minority member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has used his influence to make prevention and control of infectious diseases part of U.S. diplomacy and was instrumental in reauthorizing the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
