    The mission of the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR)  is to foster development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and quality-of-life of people with disabilities.  A primary goal of the center’s supported research is to bring the health related problems of people with disabilities to the attention of the best scientists in order to capitalize upon the myriad of advances occurring in the biological, behavioral, and engineering sciences.

    The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) and the NIH Virology Interest Group announce the Thirteenth Annual Norman P. Salzman Memorial Award in Virology. This award has been established to recognize outstanding research accomplishments by a post-doctoral fellow or research trainee working in the field of virology at the NIH.

    The Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary and Alternative Medicine series was established to honor Dr. Straus, the founding director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and an internationally recognized clinician-scientist, who died in 2007.

    The goal of the Symposium is to bring together experts in the basic science of stem cell biology as well as clinical cardiovascular medicine to discuss the emerging basic science, preclinical animal models, and clinical applications to cardiovascular disease.  The newest advances in stem cell technology and research will be discussed.

    NIH holds the patent for targeting Janus kinases and discovering novel immunosuppressive agents. It has now been 20 years since the discovery of the Jak/STAT pathway.  Industry scientists will be present to speak and present their most recent work; together this meeting will focus on the translational advances that have arisen with the basic discoveries of this important Jak/STAT pathway.

    On April 25-26, 2011, an organizational meeting took place in Moscow to prepare for The Forum planned for the fall of 2011.  This working meeting brought together U.S. and Russian government officials and researchers who discussed the development of the Forum Scientific Committee, determined working groups and assigned U.S. and Russian leads, determined and assigned tasks for Forum partners, and coordinated activities, budgets, and capabilities.

Results will provide empiric evidence to inform the implementation of any systematic surveillance system necessary to identify and track emerging safety issues.

    The Stephen E. Straus, M.D. Portrait Unveiling and Reception was hosted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to honor their Founding Director, Dr. Straus, and to unveil a portrait of him, which will now hang in the lobby of NCCAM as a tribute to his work. The reception took place on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

    The Salzman Symposium and Memorial Award Program was made possible through an endowment held by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.  Mrs. Lenore Salzman established the endowment in memory of her husband, Dr. Norman P. Salzman, and it is supported by continued individual contributions. The program gives an award for innovative and creative research in the field of virology to an outstanding postdoctoral fellow from NIH, FDA, or SAIC-Frederick.

    Training the next generation of clinical and translational researchers is part of the NIH Clinical Center mission, and the CC and its Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education (OCRTME) did as much when they welcomed more than 260 fellows to the seventh annual Clinical Investigator Student Trainee (CIST) Forum, which took place on November 4-6, 2009 at the Clinical Center – National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

    The 2009 mHealth (Mobile Health) Summit, organized by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), was an unprecedented two-day event bringing together more than 800 public and private sector science, medical, policy and mobile technology experts to develop a new roadmap related to the integration of science and wireless solutions to improve public health delivery, particularly to underserved populations, in the U.S. and around the world.

    The Fogarty International Center's 40th anniversary gala brought together leaders from Congress, federal agencies, science, advocacy groups, the diplomatic corps and businesses with interest in global health issues. The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health hosted the Oct. 15 dinner at the Italian embassy in Washington, DC and honored Sen. Richard G. Lugar, R-Ind., and Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., for their global health leadership in Congress.
