    Roger Y. Tsien, Ph.D., winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2008, delivered the fourth annual Sayer Vision Research Lecture, hosted by the National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the National Institutes of Health. His talk was titled: “Breeding and Building Molecules to Spy on Cells and Tumors.”

    The Stephen E. Straus, M.D. Portrait Unveiling and Reception was hosted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to honor their Founding Director, Dr. Straus, and to unveil a portrait of him, which will now hang in the lobby of NCCAM as a tribute to his work. The reception took place on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

    The Salzman Symposium and Memorial Award Program was made possible through an endowment held by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.  Mrs. Lenore Salzman established the endowment in memory of her husband, Dr. Norman P. Salzman, and it is supported by continued individual contributions. The program gives an award for innovative and creative research in the field of virology to an outstanding postdoctoral fellow from NIH, FDA, or SAIC-Frederick.

    Training the next generation of clinical and translational researchers is part of the NIH Clinical Center mission, and the CC and its Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education (OCRTME) did as much when they welcomed more than 260 fellows to the seventh annual Clinical Investigator Student Trainee (CIST) Forum, which took place on November 4-6, 2009 at the Clinical Center – National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

    The 2009 mHealth (Mobile Health) Summit, organized by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), was an unprecedented two-day event bringing together more than 800 public and private sector science, medical, policy and mobile technology experts to develop a new roadmap related to the integration of science and wireless solutions to improve public health delivery, particularly to underserved populations, in the U.S. and around the world.

    Organized by the O’Neill family, Boo!Run for Life is an annual 10K race and 2 mile walk designed to raise awareness and funding for renal cell cancer research.  Funds raised through the event support the O’Neill Fund at the Foundation for NIH.

    Pioneer Awards are designed to support individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose pioneering – and possibly transforming approaches – to major challenges in biomedical and behavioral research. The fourth annual NIH Director’s Pioneer Award Symposium featured talks by 2007 Pioneer Award winners, poster sessions by Pioneer and New Innovator Award recipients, roundtable discussions and ample opportunities for informal interaction.

    The Stephen E. Straus Distinguished Lecture in the Science of Complementary and Alternative Medicine series was established to honor Dr. Straus, the founding director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and an internationally recognized clinician-scientist, who died in 2007.

    The Fogarty International Center's 40th anniversary gala brought together leaders from Congress, federal agencies, science, advocacy groups, the diplomatic corps and businesses with interest in global health issues. The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health hosted the Oct. 15 dinner at the Italian embassy in Washington, DC and honored Sen. Richard G. Lugar, R-Ind., and Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., for their global health leadership in Congress.
