Steinman's discovery of DCs in 1973 and his subsequent research opened a new field of study within immunology: DC biology and their role in immune regulation in health and disease.

    Over sixty laboratories at the NIH and FDA were involved in glycosciences research. This meeting at NIH's Natcher Conference Center provided a venue for researchers from these laboratories to present their findings, exchange ideas, and build collaborations.

    Sarcopenia Consensus Summit was a four-day consensus definition conference co-organized by the FNIH, NIA and FDA, and sponsored by 5 pharmaceutical companies (Abbott, Amgen, Eli Lilly, Merck, and Novartis). This conference was held on May 8-11, 2012 at the InterContinental Hotel - Harbor Court, Baltimore, MD. The resulting consensus definition of sarcopenia, enabled through the Biomarkers Consortium acting as a neutral convener for academia, industry, FDA, NIH, and professional societies, with useful recommendations for researchers, clinicians, and regulators.

    The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) and the National Eye Institute (NEI) were pleased to announce the 6th Sayer Vision Research Lecture, which was held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Natcher Conference Center (NIH/Building 45) on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.  This year’s lecture was given by Yoshiki Sasai, M.D., Ph.D., RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology, speaking on the topic, “Self-Organization of Neural Structures in Three-Dimensional Stem Cell Cultures.”

    This free, one-day event took place at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Distinguished guest speakers from across the country presented lectures on a variety of symptom-related topics. Attendees gained a foundation in symptom mechanisms, measurement, and management, particularly those associated with chronic illnesses such as cancer and sickle cell disease.

    On April 25-26, 2011, an organizational meeting took place in Moscow to prepare for The Forum planned for the fall of 2011.  This working meeting brought together U.S. and Russian government officials and researchers who discussed the development of the Forum Scientific Committee, determined working groups and assigned U.S. and Russian leads, determined and assigned tasks for Forum partners, and coordinated activities, budgets, and capabilities.

Straus, M.D. Portrait Unveiling and Reception was hosted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to honor their Founding Director, Dr. Straus, and to unveil a portrait of him, which will now hang in the lobby of NCCAM as a tribute to his work. The reception took place on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

    The Salzman Symposium and Memorial Award Program was made possible through an endowment held by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.  Mrs. Lenore Salzman established the endowment in memory of her husband, Dr. Norman P. Salzman, and it is supported by continued individual contributions. The program gives an award for innovative and creative research in the field of virology to an outstanding postdoctoral fellow from NIH, FDA, or SAIC-Frederick.

The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health hosted the Oct. 15 dinner at the Italian embassy in Washington, DC and honored Sen. Richard G. Lugar, R-Ind., and Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., for their global health leadership in Congress.
