Natcher Conference Center, NIH Campus, Bethesda, MD
Advancing Biomedical Research Workforce Diversity: NIGMS Workshop for Postdocs Transitioning to Independent Positions was hosted by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which primarily supports research that lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The Institute's research training programs help provide the next generation of scientists. This workshop represented the first time any component of NIH has planned a workshop to focus on this critical transition of Postdocs who are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences.
The goal of the workshop was to cover a broad range of topics that well help Postdocs make a successful transition to independence, including:
- Providing assistance to young investigators who are members of underrepresented groups in finding a position and establishing a successful research career.
- Emphasis on participants who are underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. finding the right institutional fit & applying for a position
- Succeeding in the job interview and seminar & negotiating a start-up package
- Establishing a lab & finding a mentor
- Networking and forming collaborations
- Applying for and getting a grant
- Navigating the tenure process
