Joseph M. Feczko, M.D.
Prior to his retirement in 2009, Dr. Feczko served as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Pfizer, Inc., and was responsible for all aspects of Pfizer’s medical affairs including global regulatory matters and medical policies with a particular emphasis on programs post-NDA approval. Joe was also responsible for all of the company’s in-line products from a medical perspective. Additionally, he works to enhance Pfizer’s relationships with government regulators, organized medicine and key medical opinion leaders around the world representing Pfizer’s commitment to good medicine and the highest standards of safety and efficacy.
Joe’s vision is to enhance the public’s understanding of the value of industry and innovation. He was directly involved in shaping medical policy internally and in partnering with other stakeholders in healthcare. As CMO, he was frequently called upon to represent the company and industry’s views in issues that affect patients, their families and their care – trying to shape a more positive environment for health, and not only the traditional disease management approach.
Joe also brought together all aspects of clinical development into a single functioning role – a development continuum that truly spans the entire life-cycle of Pfizer products and becomes an enabler of commercial success.
Joe began his career at Pfizer in 1982. First, he spent four years at NY Headquarters working with Pfizer International Medical Marketing. In 1986, he moved to Pfizer Central Research headquarters in England, and until 1992 held several positions of increasing responsibility culminating in Group Director of European Clinical Development and Operations. After 4 years as Medical Director at Glaxo’s Research & Development headquarters in London, Joe returned to Pfizer in 1996. In late 1996, Joe was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President, Medical and Regulatory Operations for Global Pharmaceuticals; in 2002 he was promoted to President of Worldwide Development; and in August 2006 to his present position.
Joe serves on the Technology Strategy Board for the Department of Trade & Industry, UK; Advisory Board of Center for Aging Research, University of Miami; International Trachoma Initiative; American Federation for Aging Research; the National Foundation of Infectious Diseases; the NY Academy of Medicine; he is also a member of the Pharmaceutical Drug Forum of the Institute of Medicine, and the Academic Alliance Foundation Board, as well as the International Longevity Center Board. And most recently was appointed to the Boards of Research!America and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.
Joe is board-certified in Internal Medicine and a specialist in Infectious Diseases. He has a B.Sc. degree from Loyola University Chicago, and an M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
