Joel S. Marcus, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. and Alexandria Venture Investments, Elected to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health’s Board of Directors

BETHESDA, MD, July 9, 2012 — Joel S. Marcus was unanimously elected to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Board of Directors. He began his term May 16, 2012.

Prior to founding Alexandria Real Estate Equities and Alexandria Venture Investments, Marcus was a partner at the law firm Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP, specializing in corporate finance and capital markets; venture capital and mergers; and acquisitions.

“The wealth of knowledge Joel possesses will be an asset to the FNIH,” according to Charles A. Sanders, MD, FNIH chairman. “He will diversify the knowledge base of our directors and makes a wonderful addition to our board.”

“Joel has a long standing commitment to science and a deep understanding of what is needed to foster and encourage creativity and innovation in scientific research,” according to Mrs. William McCormick Blair, Jr., FNIH board secretary.

“Having worked closely with public and private entities from the life sciences community for nearly 30 years, I have witnessed the critical role that strategic funding plays in the development of life-saving discoveries,” says Marcus. “As the global leader in life sciences innovation, it is imperative that our nation continues its commitment to fund research and overcome global challenges to human health. I look forward to working with the FNIH to carry out this mission efficiently and effectively.”

Marcus serves on the boards of the Accelerator Corporation (observer), of which he was an original architect and founder, Intra-Cellular Therapies, Inc., and Research!America.

Among the board members’ responsibilities are helping guide the FNIH’s mission and purpose; ensuring effective organizational planning; ensuring adequate resources and managing them effectively; reviewing, monitoring, and strengthening FNIH’s programs and services; and enhancing FNIH’s public standing.

In total, eight people were elected to the FNIH Board of Directors this spring. They are: Mr. Jim Donovan; Paul Herrling, PhD; Ronald L. Krall, MD; Edison Liu, MD; Mr. Steven C. Mayer; Garry A. Neil, MD; and Mrs. Nina Solarz.
